S T R A T H A I L – the duo comprising Louise McMonagle and Neil Georgeson – aim to bring a new identity to cello & piano concert repertoire, championing new compositions and experimental sounds. In this concert they present music by Debussy and Bartok alongside more recent works which showcase the wide range of musical styles being created today – Reiko Füting creates a musical meditation where fragments of folk songs, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Mahler, and Schönberg are hinted at, enveloped in the warmth of resonant open strings and natural harmonics. Ann Cleare uses the two instruments uniquely to probe the relation between inner and outer worlds of sound through a world of extended techniques, Eric Wubbels’ frenetic piece alternates compulsive loops of thought and repetitive behavior with plateaus of regular, “idling” motion, while Shruthi Rajasakar shows us how music can express joy!
