Friday 15 March: Brighton Chamber Ensemble (Clarinet and Strings)

Brighton Chamber Ensemble return to St Luke’s with special guest Ellie Blackshaw to perform a programme of works inspired by familial relations and friendships. Mozart’s use of G minor, the key of his remarkable String Quintet K516 is said to be associated for Mozart with the tragedy of his father’s death; a new work by Robert Hanson for string quintet is based on a piece he wrote for his daughter’s wedding; and the wonderful Clarinet Quintet in B minor by Johannes Brahms, possibly his most profound work of chamber music, is a late work written for clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld who inspired him to continue composing despite Brahms’s declaration that his creative output was at an end.
